Tiles sound solid when tapped, not hollow. Hollow tiles crack and lift.
Grout lines are straight and even, and edges are cut clean.
Floors drain the right way in bathrooms, porches and patios.
Expansion gaps are left at walls, so tiles don't pop up as the house heats and cools.

Can new tiles go over old tiles?
Sometimes, if the old tiles are solid, level and well bonded. If they're hollow, cracked or uneven, they need to come up first.
Porcelain or ceramic?
Porcelain is denser and better for floors, patios and wet areas. Ceramic is fine for walls and lighter-use floors.
How is tiling priced?
Usually by the square foot or square metre, plus preparation work like levelling or removing old tiles. Ask what's included in the rate.
