Before you knock anything down
Some walls hold up the roof or the floor above. Before removing a wall, have the contractor or an engineer confirm whether it's load-bearing. If it is, it can usually still come out, but it needs a beam and proper support.
How a renovation usually runs
Site visit: the contractor sees the house, measures up and talks through what you want.
Written quote: a breakdown of labour, materials and who's buying what, with a payment schedule.
Plans and approval if needed: if walls, structure or floor area change, plans may need approval first.
The work: done in stages, with payments tied to finished stages rather than dates.
Walk-through: you check the finished job against the quote before the final payment.

Questions
Home Renovation: common questions
How much does a home renovation cost in Trinidad?
It depends on the size of the house, what's changing and the finishes you choose. A contractor will give you a written quote after a site visit. Get at least two quotes and compare what each one includes, not just the total.
Do I need approval to renovate my house?
Cosmetic work like painting, tiling and new cupboards usually doesn't. Changing the structure, the footprint or the use of the building usually does. Your contractor or draughtsperson can confirm, and many applications are now made online through DevelopTT.
Can we live in the house during the renovation?
Often, yes, if the work is done in stages. Kitchens and bathrooms are the hardest to live without, so plan around them.
Who buys the materials?
Either way works. Some homeowners buy materials themselves; others let the contractor buy them. Agree it in writing before work starts, and keep receipts.
